EFFORTS TO SAVE JULIE AND THE PHANTOMS STILL STRONG
Show’s Lead Madison Reyes Dresses as Julie at Fan Convention
The December 2021 announcement that fan-favorite Netflix Original series Julie and the Phantoms would not be renewed left fans devastated, but not defeated—it prompted a worldwide campaign to get messages on theater marquees and billboards with one simple goal: “Save Julie and the Phantoms.”
The musical comedy-drama premiered in September 2020 and follows Julie, who struggles to find motivation to continue making music after she loses her mom, until she meets a band of ghosts who were on the brink of success before their sudden deaths 25 years earlier.
In February 2022, one fan’s efforts to save the show that captured the hearts of audiences and critics alike began in Sydney, Australia, with the appeal shining bright on the marquee of a local Orpheum Theatre—which pays homage to the three-time Emmy-winning show’s references to the ghost band’s dream gig. It inspired fans to band together from across the globe to spearhead a campaign dubbed “The Orpheum Tour,” which shared the message on 50 theater marquees and billboards across five continents. The series’ executive producer Kenny Ortega reacted to the tour with deep gratitude for the project that he said “impacted the industry.”
“Julie and the Phantoms is about believing that you can do anything you put your heart into,” a statement on the group’s website says. Over a year later, fans are still calling on Netflix to renew the beloved show—or for another streaming service to pick it up. In a recent Just Jared poll with a selection of over 30 revival hopefuls, Julie and the Phantoms ranks in the top three and has received over 140,000 votes so far. A fan-led petition has nearly 220,000 signatures and is continuously growing.
Since the cancellation announcement, fans have also shown up for two packed conventions in Paris and Brazil. At the latest convention, lead actor Madison Reyes, who received an Emmy nod for her portrayal of Julie, dressed as the character. Ortega, Reyes, and other Phantoms cast were joined by surprise guests from the cast of the Brazilian show the Netflix Original is based on, Julie e os Fantasmas. The event left fans inspired to continue igniting pleas to streaming services to keep the lovable ghost band alive.

I love this show so much. I can’t even explain why this show means so much to me and I know I am just one person, but this show really did save my life. I am so upset at Netflix for not renewing it. Netflix says that they do not cancel successful shows- but JATP won three daytime Emmys, an MTV award, and has had multiple other nominations. The soundtrack on Spotify alone has 1.1 million monthly listeners and has hit number one on ITunes in both the USA and Australia. The cast deserves better and so do the fans. If Netflix does not want to make a second season then fine, but they should allow another streaming service too. Kenny said he tried to buy the rights but was unable to. WHY? If Netflix has no plans to make a new season then let someone else do it. We got scammed out of 5 seasons, 5 seasons of seeing Julie and our Phantoms. Not. Fair.

Netflix should have made 4 more seasons but didn’t. I have watched many shows but nothing compares to Julie and the phantoms! I was so sad when I found out that they canceled my favorite show. Me and my cousin love this show and love watching it together but don’t want to be watching the same 9 episodes, please Netflix please bring this show back!

I miss Julie and the phantoms so much, I wish we hadn’t been left off like that on a cliff hanger. I have rewatched it more times than I can count and cried finding out it was discontinued, I pray that one day in the near future it will come back to our screens and we will be able to find out what was going to be in store for Julie and the phantoms ❤️.

So disappointing that they ended it. So mad! Why does Netflix keep making shows and when it’s good they cancel it. I mean I’m not a business person but I’m Def smart enough to know u give the people what they want. No wonder Netflix is doing worse than they use to be. They keep making people mad by doing this. It’s a great show. So Netflix let someone else buy it n continue it so they can make the money and keep the public happy since yall dont.

I really love the show. It makes no sense they would cancelled it! Everyone put so much love and effort onto the show. We are never forgiving netflix for this 😦 It’s so crazy, great cast, great songs, great succes! they won awards, it was really succesuful! There has to be a reason they wont renewed it. They should realize how much the show means to us, they brought so much to us in a really difficult time.

I watched JATP with my granddaughter and when it ended we were so disappointed that there was there was no Season 2. Very good series and and the actors were wonderful. the music was fantastic How can a show have good reviews and nominations then get cancelled. This needs to be fixed. I also signed the petition.

I am a 47 year old watching it with my 22 year old and 13 yeR old and we love it and wish there was more seasons. I listen to thier songs on Spotify. Please please bring the show back even if it is in the form of a movie if you have too.

Netflix made a bone head move. So much of the stuff they’ve put out is so lacking. Julie and the Phantoms was one of a very few series they have that inspired and just made you feel good. In this world today we definitely need more of that.

This is my favorite show and have inspired me to start singing again! I don’t know why Netflix would do this to the aspiring fans?! Netflix has also stated that they don’t cancel shows that have been so successful for a long period of time! The actors have stated that they are upset that Netflix did not continue the show! So, to Netflix I say you are literally contradicting what you said you would not do to a show?! I say they should bring back the show for not just the fans but the actors!
